Some Season 3 Shauna Thoughts
So with the Melissa/Shauna relationship developing in season 3, it's had me reflecting a lot on Shauna's past relationships.
Sophie Nelisse has had this to say in recent interviews since s3e2 has been out:
"I think that she's not able to love herself," the actress continues. "And I don't think she's then able to love anyone else, even though I think that what she desperately needs is to be held and told it wasn't her fault and told that everything's gonna be okay and that someone forgives her." - people.com
"It's what she needs deep down inside of her core. She needs to be loved for who she is and to be held and to be told that it's okay and it's not her fault and to have someone relieve her of all of her guilt. But I think because she has so much guilt, she's not able to love herself, therefore, she can't really love anyone else." - Entertainment Weekly
Starting with the very first episode of the series, what does Shauna ask Jeff when they're hooking up in the car?: "Tell me you love me. I won't hold you to it."
I think Shauna getting with Jeff was partially a result of the emotions she'd been feeling toward Jackie that we hear about during their big fight at the end of season 1. Shauna's experience is that Jackie is too self centered to truly care about Shauna. So Shauna goes looking for that attention elsewhere. It just so happened to be with Jackie's boyfriend. (I think it's also safe to say that this could have br misplaced attraction towards Jackie, as we now officially have canon queer Shauna!)
Then, rinse and repeat with Adam. Shauna and Jeff's marriage is failing, and Shauna likes Adam, but I think she mostly likes how much Adam likes her. That affection is what gets her off.
And now Melissa. Shauna is almost completely isolated from everyone. Melissa tells Shauna that they're all afraid of her, and Shauna probably already had gleaned that herself. So, when Melissa not only kisses Shauna, but also tells her explicitly that she's not afraid of her, Shauna can't help but like that.
Hope this little character analysis was good/ interesting, it's my first time doing a full post on here after being a long-time lurker :).
