Does anyone know why am required to buy a $2000 laptop?

I recently got accepted and the offer letter said I will have to purchase a specific laptop designated by school right before the beginning of the semester. And it will be about 2000 to 2500 dollars. Does anyone know what this expensive laptop is for? Also, do they normally pick a good one at least?
