John Moses Browning, easily the greatest American gun designer that has ever lived and one of the giants of the gun world, developed the .32 ACP (aka 7.65 x 17mm) cartridge in between 1894 and 1896. In 1897 he completed the first prototype of a .32 ACP pocket pistol. That pistol would become the FN 1899. It has been said that more pistols have been chambered in .32 ACP than any other cartridge.
